Hello!

It's been to long.

This past week the la de les had a little run to Chicago, Illinois and back. We played with the likes of Listener, Hushpad, and SleepyV, all of which are beautiful.

La De Les has recently released a new music video titled "The Inadequate" , which you can view below:

I collaborated with Robert Paniconi. His black and white photography is the bomb, and I ended up putting together the animation. It was my first real stab at stop motion, and I think it turned out pretty nicely.

Also, this week is the gallery show at Espresso Royale, right on commonwealth. I'm going to be showing some new paintings, along with Will Holbert.

I need more wood paneling indeed so I can get back to painting.

Painting Major Changes

Hello stranger-blog,

My last update was displaying my progress on "Horse Teeth"...But, I've made some big changes to the last painting. The working title name has been changed to "Rabbit Foot", and I've drastically limited the color scheme.

I've finally wanted to put some detailing in the features of the face, as well as the rabbit itself. I got rid of the horse completely, but I may scrounge him up again in the future of this piece.

The figure will definitely be defined, and there will be drawn patterns definitely incorporated as well. Her face is coming along nicely, as well as the rabbit's features.

More updates coming soon! I'll be posting the lastest project I've been working on, which is a music video for my band La De Les.

A ton of experimentation. I'm using a combo of graphite, gouache, and acrylic. I've been loving the gold paint as well. She may go through a mini transformation yet....

Bringing Back

Hello Friends,

So, last summer, Will and I started up a little vintage shop called "Holbert Vintage" (When I was still a 'Wilson') and were inspired to start it up again. We had so much fun finding treasures that we want to see what we can't find in the foothills of Massachusetts.

So, you'll be seeing this little dusty shop opening up soon! We'll be listing some neat little items, including Sailboat-related house decor, Peacocks, and a really neat 1960's projector that my friend Bryan and I found.

I just started a new job at Forever21, which has been pretty great. Not to stressful, but keeps you busy!
I will hopefully be promoted to Recovery Specialist soon, which would be grand. :)

Also, I've been thinking about Luci's Magic Bell a lot lately and you may see some re-envisioned versions of her soon. I'm going to mix some new and old elements together to redefine this little character.

I'm not sure what to say, except I've really stripped down, from media, color, and environment, and will continue to do so with my future pieces.

I've been doing a lot of experimenting, which I don't know if I can afford or not.

As far as the process, I've been much more intentional about references. And color; I'm abandoning the palette that I've always reverted to for much more duo tones.

I like how old this piece feels. I feel very much like an old soul.

FLOCKING- A Series of Paintings

Presenting, my series of paintings, "FLOCKING"

I did these little doozies for the Pop Femme Sugar Coated Strange that was held in May. I took a completely different direction than even I myself was shocked by. All in all, I pretty much abandoned any sort of obsessive detail and striped down, as you can definitely see in my Watercolors.

I really don't have much else to say about these pieces, except that they were a step in a new direction.

The main idea I wanted to capture was the subtlety of change, as unrecognizable as it is in reality, the activity that one goes through varies.

Here are the Paintings:

Tearing, Oils and Ink, 13 x 19, For Sale

Red Fox, Watercolor and Ink, 8 x 10, SOLD

Red Fingers, 8 x 10, Watercolor and Ink, For Sale

Red Lips, 8 x 10 , Watercolor and Ink, SOLD

The process of these paintings were very much intuitive, especially the watercolors. I didn't do much thumbnails beforehand, which is something that I'm usually not comfortable doing, but I think all and all the paintings captured the unsure nature of change, as well as the spontaneity of time.

I used a combination of ink and watercolor, usually laying down the watercolors first then drawing in the details with ink.

For the Oil painting, "Flocking" went through quite the transformation. I struggled with it for a long time, and all and all it's one of my pieces that I look at and am uncomfortable around. Naturally speaking, me and "Flocking" have quite the 'history'. I named the series "Flocking" because of the tension I had with the piece.

Here's a shot of it in it's beginning stages (Which there are many things I love and Hate about the beginning version!)

The only regret I have was destroying the bird and moving it. I may even remove the bird when I receive "Flocking" after it's returned from Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Lastly, here are some shots of my newest works, including a complete overhaul of my piece for Crazy4CultClassics that's being held in July at the Gallery 1988.

SOWA Artist Market +Matted Lovely Prints

Hello Friends!

This past Sunday William and I were vendors at Boston's Sowa Artist Market. It was a ton of fun- And we certainly learn a lot and met a lot of wonderful people.

I now have some rare-er prints that I don't often sell that will be available in my etsy shop that I will be selling at Sowa Artist Market as well.

Now, for a mouth full . ♥

For quite some time, I've been undergoing silent yet a long directional change in my aesthetic choices and artistic direction, for the lack of a better term. I honestly have been trying to redefine my work, strangely trying to abandon the principles and rules I eagerly learned through my education.

Realizing my state and my urge to abandon any sort foundational principles about art, I started analyzing whether this was a wise choice.

I soon realize what I missed in my work was not the benchmarks I was trying to attain with each piece but the space to use the principles I learned naturally, not strictly mechanically.

Saying this, these pieces were the result of the pressure I felt to create my "New Direction". I realize that this was the issue and, ultimately, stifling my creativity in any aspect.

With that said, here is a list of tracks that I feel define what I felt during this exploration:

This painting was done for the Japan Benefit Concert being held tonight at the City on a Hill church in Allston, Massachusetts.

There will be performances by The La De Les, Fishing the Sky, and Doctors&Lawyers as well as a silent art auction, featuring work from myself and William Holbert.

All the proceeds will be going to Global Giving, a non-profit organization.

It should be a wonderful event indeed, and I'm happy to be a part of it. ♥

Hello Friends~

This past week my In-Laws Bill and Sandy Holbert came and visited Will and I in Boston. We discovered the North End of Boston together. It was the first time we had been to the Shoreline since our Move out here in January, so it was certainly good.

I have some photos documenting our excursions. It was a lovely day for walking and exploring Boston. We ended up going to Paul Revere's house and the Museum of Fine Arts as well.

I did however get some lovely photos of the shoreline:

Imogen's Wonderful World

Hello Friends ♥

Lately I've been working on an extra-super-cool custom illustration for the Lovely Ingrid of her Daughter, Imogen. It was one of the first real commissions I'd receive and was really exciting to work through the process of the illustration.

I had to be really conscious of how I was portraying Imogen from photographs but still emphasis a whimsical, story-book, child-like illustration, yet add an artist interest as well. With this in mind, I wanted to create an illustration that communicated the idea of Imogen, her lovely and cute cute pets in a sophisticated, creative, yet innocent and childlike way.

Thus! Without further a do: The illustration. ♥

Once the painting was done, I printed it on Fine-Artist canvas and added some hand-painted details. It was super exciting seeing and holding it in person.

Tied String

"Tied String"

"I took the string I found underneath the dried leafs and tied my past tightly."

Although I had originally just wanted this piece to reflect self-change, I started developing a sort of reflection of self-doubt and regret. I originally wanted the lady to be helping the bird, but soon switched the motive of piece instead. I soon changed a sense of longing and need into a sense of reaction of change, and how those reactions can be harmful to yourself.

Although the piece is a reflection upon the idea of change and self-doubt, I also wanted to include a sense of growth. Thus, not only are the foliage and leaves decorative, they somewhat symbolize growth from self-doubt and change.

Although I could say a lot more about this piece, I want to leave it at this: The lazy eye is intentional. ♥

I've definately been neglecting this blog since my move to Boston.

My list of things to do today is rather short, now that I've found a part-time position working as a Baker.

• Get ready for a Fort Party tonight!

These past couple of weeks have been some of the most interesting and new experiences I've felt in a long time. I've been receiving quite a bit of artistic opportunities, interviews, and projects though, on the other hand, Will and I have been adjusting to our new lives in Boston, reuniting with The La De les and with the Charisma House.

I'm still in search of a part-time position to establish some stability and routine. The job search has somewhat put me and my artistic endeavors on hold; and being in a new place, getting familiar with my surroundings has been an adventurous yet daunting task.

I'll be posting some pictures of my new home, Will and I's trip up to Massachusetts, some new Paintings from various projects, and my ventures with The La De Les very soon. It's going to be a very exciting next couple of months.

A Quick Hello + love

Hello dear friends~!
It's been a busy couple past days but my situation is starting to calm itself. In the past three days, I've managed to graduate, pack and move all of my belongings to Ohio until Will and I move to Boston in January.

I've managed to finished one of my paintings, 'Hurtling Foxes', which was created from a color-pencil thumb and colored digitally. I'll be dedicating a post for it very soon, but, for now, you can see it either at my deviantart, society6, or behance. I've printed it out onto canvas paper and plan on finishing touches with Oils. ♥

I've also finished some cute little ink and watercolors that I'll also be posting very soon. I've been more active on my tumblr, but that's about to change. You can see them at my society6 or deviantart as well. ♥

It's been quite exciting going through this process, and I have a couple of other paintings that have combined Oils and digital, with some strictly only Oils. The combinations have proved to be good ones ♥ I like speaking of it in a blog setting because of it's more casual nature; and I realize that I can't be afraid to just post silly little inspirations once in a while.

"love pendulum" works in progress+ other inspiring objects

Hello friends!

First, I was 'playing' photographer and took some photos of my morning delight: coffee ♥.

Mmm. Mocha! I make my Mocha's with almond milk and raw cocoa. I also love using the mugs my husband Will made for me. So much love in one delicious drink!

Mmm! I use my espresso maker often that my sister Lena gave me. I love it. ♥

In art-related news, between finals, studying, and my very-near graduation, I've managed to get some painting in here and there.

I've adapted my original lineart of 'Love Pendulum' into a full-fledged painting.

Here I am with my pom-pom hair working away. I find myself skipping from room to room to maintain inspiration. My studio recently has transferred from the kitchen to my bedroom. :}

I'm really loving how the painting is turning out. I started the painting digitally and printed the painting onto canvas with archival inks. I then applied Matte-medium and am currently painting detail with oils. It's been exciting to see how the process unfurls. ♥

I'll be posting a new painting soon and selling prints shortly after her release. Her name may be familiar to you and you've seen her before. I hope you will like her just as much as I do!

Hello friends!

Just a quick update, here's what i've been up to this week. There's another painting to go along with this diptych, which I'll be doing a set of 3 or 4 diptychs altogether. Working title : "apple head"

I'm working on a set of 4 diptychs altogether.

And, just for fun, I took a picture of the dress I'm wearing today- I really love the colors and it's been a recent inspiration in my work.

I purchased this dress from forever21.com if anyone is interested. • ♥

Lastly, here's a silly picture of me. I was taking a picture of my wip for "Apple head" and decided to have a quick "me" photo shoot. ~.~ I suppose that's the fate of recently purchasing an awesome camera.

To my surprise, it was brought to my attention yesterday that Smashing Magazine featured some of my work from my Luci's Magic Bell series in their "Artist inspiration for the week" column. it certainly made my day, and was honored to be featured amongst many of the artists that were in the article.

I was so shocked that I almost didn't believe it at first.

Just a very quick post: here is what I've been up to recently....

"dark eyes" works in progress

I wanted to show everyone what I've been working on lately. I've been working a lot with oils lately to broaden my understanding of traditional mediums. I really like how she's turning out.

The red-tones will be changed quite a bit once I start putting some glazes on her, but, without further ado!

Sorry for the glare! It was hard not catching the glare from the lighting : { But, yes! She's coming along, but has quite a ways to go so far.

That's it for now friends~. I will be updating my Etsy shop with new Archival prints tomorrow.

Also, here's some sketches! Many will be further developed for some paintings & drawings I want to do in the near future. I had to much fun drawing those doggies in History class & you'll see some experimentation with some letter forms. Will's latest interest in linotype has inspired me to try my hand at some letter forms. I've also been inspired by Jessica Hische , an excellent designer and font-crafter, who was shown to me by Danielle Duncan.

I am certainly happy with the direction of my newest works. I’ve been focusing much more on personal work rather than strictly illustrative; illustrative work will always be a part of my body of work, but lately I’ve felt this great sense of needing to produce more personal and emotive paintings; not to say that the children illustrations aren’t personal and emotive; but to be intentional of my paintings with little context. The illustrations I’ve produced have certainly taught me a lot about how I paint and my process, and I am grateful for the ‘niche’ or ‘context’ they gave me to ‘hone my skills’; but, I feel this piece has placed my feet in a new place, and it’s exciting. I will definitely continue my illustrative pieces, but I’m finally giving myself the chance to do some personal paintings (by neglecting school drastically as well), working with traditional medias and it feels great.

Enough Ranting! Here is the painting.

"Troll Keeper"

I'm proud to announce my newest works!
Here is my newest painting, "Troll Keeper".

This was one of few survivors from my older-sketches. The painting sat idle for quite some time, but I'm glad I decided to finish it.

I hope you like her ~.~. She keeps the trolls away with her paleness.

The inspiration for her creature was inspired by a carousal, none the less. I really wanted to experiment with a newer style back when I first started the painting. It was so nice coming back to it and seeing it completely different than before.

I promise I'll write more in my next entry- I have some exciting new paintings in the works. But, for now, I have some serious studying to do for Biology.

"Sea Mermaid" Final Painting + tutorial

I'm happy to announce that "Sea Mermaid" is finally completed!

I've created a tutorial of my progression and explaining my process as I painted this little baby! It took me quite some time to write and complete the tutorial, so I hope you find it informative and helpful!

The inspiration behind the piece came from the urge to painting something that I never painted before. Originally I wanted the girl to be alone, but as I worked on the painting I desired an interactive element and a sense of wonder. I still wanted to keep the solitude of the piece present, but accompanied by something other than the self.

I tend to make my paintings sweet yet melancholy; I want to express hope in a simple, yet within a complicated existence. I don't want to express a perfect world, but a sincere and genuine one in my paintings. I create the environments I do to present relationships in a new context rather than the normal and mundane, yet, relationships change; we can grow apart or grow closer together, thus, capturing the sweetness of a moment is somewhat wonderful. This combination of the fantastic and the melancholy express this perspective the clearest.

here's a works in progress piece (i've collected quite a bit of those...i promise i will finish one soon!) "look what you've done". i'm going to try a slightly different process with this image, which will include a digital sketch (which is what you see below!) printing it on watercolor paper and proceeding in oils. i'm excited to try out this new process.

also, here are some sketches. i was always a messy-sketchy, pressing too hard, but i hope you enjoy. they range from quick sketches, concepts, to studies.

cute animal illustrations + "sea mermaid" progress

hello !

the past couple of days i've been reflecting on the beautiful season of fall...the colors are always so rich and the sky always seems clearer.

to take some mental breaks from some of my 'major' pieces, i've indulged in some cute animal illustrations. as you may have noticed, they are sitting quite comfortably as my external links and such ! i love them so.

focusing on the lineart and quickness of the illustrations helps 'refill' my spirit when i get stuck and frazzled with one of my more extensive paintings, especially after looking at a painting for 3 hours straight. these quick little illustrations help me stay active creatively while boosting my spirits with their cuteness.

Helll-llo~
I was given a chance today to work on personal work. It felt great drawing again, and gazing through Golden-Age Comic book stories (http://goldenagecomicbookstories.blogspot.com), which a dear friend directed me too, I found some old illustrations by Arthur Rackham. I will most likely do a feature of his work in a future-blog post.

For now, since I'm just about to eat dinner with William my love, I wanted to show what I drew today.

It was inspired by Arthur Rackham's illustrative-treatment of "Alice's Adventure in Wonderland".

"troll keeper" sneak-peeks + news

hello!
i've been mad at work on my senior show these past couple of weeks and the deadline has finally found it's way to this thursday. it's terrifying, indeed, but i'm anxious to get my paintings completed.

i'm still deciding whether i will finish them digitally; for now, i must keep painting!

i've been working on some newer paintings when i need some comfort-painting and drawing time in between my work on my series "golden apple" (which, the title will be inevitably changed soon). i will come up with a more suitable title after the paintings are more complete, which, ultimately, is how i've always titled my paintings. i have a hard time titling pieces until i see how they turn out in reality; they always look different in my head.

"sea mermaid" work in progress mini-tutorial

Hello~!
I wanted to post a works in progress- The lineart to this has been sitting in a folder on my computer desktop and I finally decided to take a break from my senior show and dive back into my 'roots'. I'm taking a totally different approach than normal as far as placing color on the 'canvas' and so far, so good. ~.~

I started off with a variety of layers set on 'multiply', 'soft light' and 'hard light'. I had my lineart above these layers and continued to place color using the gradient-round tool instead of a brush.

Before I started placing color, I took the lineart and made three layers above the original lineart. I then proceeded to blur each one (Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur) with different levels of feathering- From farthest from the original lineart to closest.You can notice that in the second step I feathered more outward from the lineart on the girl. After I had placed all the colors in their desired location, I then painted in the darks and highlights over top the gradients.

The gradient-round tool is a nice way to establish gradients without the extra time and work trying to manage that with a brush. Using the gradient round-tool to establish points of interests is an interesting way to approach placing color. I've noticed in doing so, it's quicker and allows you to place brush strokes over top, giving it a desired detail and texture without a lot of extra work.

Just a heads up, I'm in the process of re-branding myself and my website. I will soon have all my work, including Fly Okay, Magdalene Alan, and Alana Soun, under one website: www.saraholbert.com!

I'm in the process of getting my website together and such. Also, I will be releasing new, and improved, Archival Giclee prints of selective pieces soon, which will be available only through my Website and My Etsy Shop.

I'm switching printers and paper altogether, so, just so you all know, if you want a print at the price they have been (which is a darn good price!) you may want to purchase one you've had your eye on asap! The day is coming where I will be raising the value ~.~ :heart:

I'm in a transitioning point. I've been hard at work with my final senior presentation/show pieces, which includes 3 large pieces done with oils. They'll be showing between November 8th to late November. I'm very excited to show them to all of you after November 8th.

a dry spell

Hello dearies,
Lately I've been hard at work on my senior show, which there will be progress shots soon. Other than the daily routine of waking up, painting, going to class, working on my website, and more painting, I feel I haven't produced as much as I want and desire too.

I have a couple of works in progress sitting in a folder on my desktop, and wanted to share them. I think I'm at a transitional point in my life and art, and I think that's okay. Although I've been known as a 'children's illustrator', I realize I don't want to limit myself in that aspect. I want to do both; I think combining illustrative knowledge with painting is what I'm striving for.

Honestly, I've been associated with children illustration so much that I've been questioned "So how are you going to incorporate innocence in your pieces now that you're married?" At first, I felt like I was doing something 'wrong', something that was already brought to my attention by thinking about marriage in the first place. Then, with smarter and more passionate feelings, I realized that innocence isn't the absent of something, it is your mindset and a viewpoint of your life.

I incorporated personal definitions into the idea of 'innocence' into my paintings so much that I myself became associated as a child by others; This was not my intent; I simply wanted to question one of the 'bench markers' of society; Adulthood, becoming of age, and why we abandon the creative and free intuition you have before you hit puberty. Why do most abandon their comfort-levels with themselves, as you see in young people, in exchange for pressures of becoming a 'woman' or 'man'?

I realize now that I am who I am, and have always been this way, but, now I ask, why is it that womanhood is pretty much only associated with your sexuality? Is that why the question of whether I can portray innocence in my paintings is no longer valid now that I am married? Why is it that womanhood and innocence aren't associated with one another?
I am now exploring the many levels of womanhood, the many social norms attached to it, and this idea of innocence I was so associated with.

It's been to long....

i’m married. ~.~

these past two weeks have been a blur, from traveling, packing, and, yes, getting married. with this said, i haven’t been given the time or chance to even update any of my online presences. will and i now somewhat settled and will be unpacking, making my temporary home homey. as soon as we’re more settled in i’ll be posting pictures and slideshow of our wedding and honeymoon…which i’ve been so anxious to do so!

i can’t wait to sit a my desk and start drawing. it’s been too long…and with wedding festivities wrapping up, this new phase will certainly be inspiring new subject matters and thought processes…yet with a very familiar sense of who i am and was. i don’t feel to much different…except for the fact that will and i are official; with a title, mr. and mrs, holberts… and the fact that we asked our loved ones, everything around us, and God to witness our choice to be together is still flowing through my body, giving me a strength that is somewhat to powerful to be described with words.

i’m being naughty and typing this in class…and so, i should probably listen. i’ll be posting pictures soon…and arts and drawings soon enough!

Feather Brain + the coming of a wedding

After many wedding festivities my good friends Austin Givens and Courtney, the time has come to start considering and pondering the fact that I will be wedded in less than a week. I am by no means nervous, just giddy, like my spirit is on the loose from it's normal stomping grounds.

The day is approaching where I will be changed, whether it be in the moments of gathering all the decorations, or in the moments of silence between the hustle and bustle that is destined to be found during my wedding season.

There is much more to be said, but not now. These words of mine are almost ripe, though.

I've completed a new illo, and it will be running in threadless, hopefully soon. I'll be sure to post the link!

"Lion Heart" new print + combining influences

for the past 6 months or so, i've hesitated releasing some more of my ernest and personal drawings and paintings due to their different subject matter and process. finally, after much, much, much thought, i've decided to combine the body of work under one name: sara.

my magdalene alan series of work is very precious to me, and i really, really enjoy working in that artistic mode. i was hesitant of combining that influence and side into fly okay, pretty much the complete opposite side of the spectrum.

i now realize that the two modes can enrich one another. and, with my indecisive nature, i can say that with ease.

hi!

i feel that my blog is quite new and lonely so i've scrounged up some old drawings of mine that i'd like to develop. i'd love to turn these drawings into oil paintings or something more than they have been sitting in a folder on my computer. &heart

After much thought I've decided to change blogging services. I wasn't to keen on the wordpress without CSS editing, which was only available for cash-monies, so I made the switch. I do like blogspot; simpler interface and cuter. ~.~
